Hire a reputable company. Get insurance and find out what, if anything, is exempt. Move any special, small, fragile or valuable items yourself.
For large, easily damaged items like antiques, mirrors, glass tabletops etc. try to watch them being wrapped in their undamaged state then check everything as it comes out at the new location. If anything is damaged, it’s much easier to prove the movers did it if you point it out before they leave.
